Downtown

DowntownThe downtown core in Maple Ridge has managed to retain a significant share of the District's total commercial space, retail space, businesses, and employment and thus has not experienced the sort of decline seen in many other North American centres.

Maple Ridge's downtown is one of eight regional town centers in the GVRD Livable Region Strategic Plan, and is maintaining its concentration of businesses, employment, commercial development, and residential development and support services. The long-term redevelopment of the downtown core will create new retail and commercial opportunities.

Downtown Maple Ridge is also the focal point of high density residential development opportunities with large parcels of land available. Incentives have been developed by Council to encourage this. Whether it be infill, apartment, condominium or high-rise, the right opportunity exists in downtown Maple Ridge.

Initiatives for new technology investments, the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, live/work developments, densification and infilling and an overall better environment for new business investment outlined in the District's Town Centre Concept Plan will significantly add to the community's stature as a regional town centre. In the short-term, revitalized streetscapes, new infrastructure, an improved Haney Place Mall, and District incentives will help downtown remain a competitive alternative to the expanding retail/commercial development to the east and west along the highway.
